Middle Years (Years 7-9)

The middle years of secondary education (Years 7, 8 and 9) are quite unique in the challenges they offer young people.
Debney Park's Middle Years curriculum is designed according to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), research of best practice and enhanced with a range of special programs.  Our curriculum aims to assist students in their transition to secondary college and support them in their learning.  Individual learning goals are developed for each student and are take into account preferred learning styles, stage of learning and readiness to learn.
Students at the College participate in an innovative Middle Years program that is based upon best practise and research.  Students are placed into middle school classes based upon teachers’ knowledge of how individual students learn and their relationships with others.  Staff working with a particular class form a professional learning team to determine the curriculum based around four broad areas-Communication, Investigations, Design Briefs and Recreation.  English is offered as part of Communication and ESL support is provided through team teaching, withdrawal or discrete classes.

Parents are provided with detailed written reports of their child’s progress against the Victorian Essential Learning Standards twice a year.
The Middle School Group program is:

Special Programs in the Middle School

Program

Description

SCRAYP-Arts with the Brain in Mind

Artists from the Footscray Community Arts Centre work with various Middle School groups on a variety of drama based projects.  The culmination of the year’s work for each group is a performance which students write, act in and direct.  A research project through the Australian Research Council is currently being undertaken on the outcomes of the project.

soundhouse@debney

Students have access to state of the art multimedia facilities through the soundhouse@debney facility and teaching staff.  Students use this facility as a resource to assist them with their work across each of their subjects.  Normally students work within the areas of film, animation, claymation and music technology.

Student Representative Council

The SRC provides students with the opportunity to take on a leadership role in the school.  The SRC works through a system of sub-committees with each making use of the individual talents and interests of the particular group.  A teacher elects to work closely with the students in a supportive and advisory capacity.

Camps

All students have the opportunity to attend at least one three day camp throughout the year.

Sport

Students participate in three interschool sports days as well as school based Athletics and Swimming carnivals.

Instrumental Music and the Concert Band

Small specialised classes in a range of instruments are provided once a week to interested students. These students have the chance to participate in the Junior Band and College Band.

Alpine School

Students have the opportunity to attend the DEECD’s Alpine School at either the Dinner Plains or Marlo campuses during Year 9.

Advance Program

Year 9 students have the opportunity of participating in the Advance Program.  This program is community based and is taught as part of the Personal and Interpersonal Learning program.
